Finals week can be a very stressful time for many college students. Often, the results of these exams determine a large percentage of their class grade. While you may feel unable to do anything to help, there are several things you can do, and encourage them to do, to help them manage their stress.

Encourage your student to try to maintain balance in their lives, even though finals week can be a hectic week. If they like going to the gym, encourage them to try to fit it into their schedule at least once during the week. Exercise can be a great stress reliever. Encourage them to take some time to themselves. They may be spending a lot of their time studying and finishing up final projects, but remind them that it is still important to take care of themselves, too. A good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast, and a caffeinated beverage can help them do their best and successfully survive finals.

Remind your student that it is okay to ask for help. Whether they need help in academics or with their stress levels and mental health, there are many free and low-cost resources available on campus including the Esry Student Health CenterStudent Success and Academic Advising CenterCenter for Academic Support and the Counseling Center.

If your student calls you and sounds upset because of the stress they are feeling, remain calm and positive. Reassuring comments can go a long way. Let them know that you believe in them and that they will do great. Give them something to look forward to after they finish the semester. Let them know that once they get home for the summer you’ll take them to dinner or a movie to celebrate successfully completing another semester.

With the help of a strong support system, both on campus and at home, your student will successfully survive another semester!
