Join us at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 2 in Popplewell 104 for What Are You? A Theory on Human Nature, presented by Dr. Jason Eberl, faculty member and director of the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics at St. Louis University. This lecture is free and open to the public.
This presentation investigates the composition of human beings – are we immaterial minds, physical bodies, brains, souls, etc. – and what is required to persist as the same person despite physical and psychological changes over time. One perspective on these questions comes from the 13th-century philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas, whose account of human nature is compared with several other prominent theories, ranging from substance dualism to reductive materialism. These diverse views also have implications concerning when human beings first come into existence, how we ought to define death, and whether we may survive death.
