The Department of History and Geography is pleased to announce the establishment of the Nu Eta Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international honor society in geography. Dr. Dawn M. Drake is the chapter sponsor.

The seven charter members, who were inducted into the society during the Departments of History and Geography, and Philosophy and Religion’s Scholars Day on April 20, were selected for overall academic performance, as well as excellence in geography courses.

Gamma Theta Upsilon was begun in 1928 by Dr. Robert G. Buzzard at the Illinois Normal School. Today there are thousands of members of the prestigious honor society in 300 chapters at two and four year institutions of higher learning around the globe. Membership in Gamma Theta Upsilon provides members with a special mark of distinction as exceptional students in the discipline of Geography.

As the society states on their website: “Membership in an academic honor society is evidence of your dedication and competency in your career field. Some employers give hiring preference to honor society members.”
