Why
undergraduate
research?

The MWSU Biology Department offers a variety of student research opportunities in molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological biology, geology, and in science education. Our goal is to provide a collaborative learning environment in which students and faculty can apply their biological or geographic exploration and discovery experiences as professionals and as informed citizens.

Students and faculty collaborate on a variety of independent research projects. Students are encouraged to present their research at state, national, or international professional meetings, and are often invited to become coauthors on peer-reviewed publications.

Program of Research, Teaching and Applied Learning

The PORTAL program has successfully engaged undergraduates students in the full range of scientific research and activities since its beginnings in 2011. Students have contributed to the planning of research activities, gathering and analyzing data, and communicating the results through presentations and publications. PORTAL provides opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience during the summer and Gold Fridays PORTAL engages students during the academic year.
