Baseball
https://www.missouriwestern.edu/alumni/wp-content/uploads/sites/89/2019/04/Baseball-4-23-19.jpgGriffon baseball (18-17, 15-12) scored in six different innings, but Pittsburg State’s (23-18, 15-12) eight-run sixth inning gave the Gorillas a 14-10 series-clinching victory on Saturday, April 20.

A wild back-and-forth contest, Missouri Western led 8-6 after scoring three in the top of the sixth. The lead didn’t last long as Pitt State produced five hits and eight runs in the bottom half. Griffons won 7-3 on Thursday and lost 4-7 on Friday.

Next up, the Griffons play Southwest Baptist University at home at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. They will continue at home on April 30 in a doubleheader against University of Illinois Springfield.   

Men’s Golf
Men’s golf will play in the MIAA Championships on April 23-24 at the Shangra-la Resort in Monkey Island, Oklahoma.

Women’s Golf
MIAA Championships for women’s golf begins April 23 at the Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta, Kansas.

Softball
The final regular season home games for seven softball seniors will come this weekend, April 26 and 27. On Friday, April 26, the women play Washburn University at 4 and 6 p.m. The team will recognize the senior class following Saturday’s doubleheader (noon and 2 p.m.) against Emporia State.

After a 12-game win streak, softball sits alone in second place in the MIAA, three games back of Central Oklahoma. The MIAA Championships will be May 1-4.

Tennis
The MIAA announced the bracket for the MIAA Tennis Championships in Oklahoma City this weekend. Missouri Western (11-12, 2-7 MIAA) landed in the eighth spot and will face off against the top-seeded Washburn Ichabods in the opening quarterfinal round, who are also ranked fifth in the country. The match will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, April 26.

The MIAA Tennis Championships feature an eight-team single-elimination tournament. The winners of the quarterfinals matches on Friday will advance to Saturday’s semifinals, with those winners again advancing to the championship match on Sunday.

Missouri Western heads to Oklahoma City having won three of its last five duals matches. 

Track & Field

It was the fourth and final day of the meet, with finals being held for several events on the last day.

Hunter Scaggs and Kelsey Cox were the Griffons’ top finishers on Saturday, both placing sixth in their respective events. Cox also managed to break her own record in the women’s 3,000 m steeple, finishing with a time of 11:52.34.

Jordan Garr made the trip to Lawrence after competing in the Mules Relays on Friday. After a pair of 12th place finishes in Warrensburg, Garr took eighth in the men’s shot put at the Kansas Relays.

Next up for Missouri Western is the Drake Relays, which will begin on April 24 in Des Moines, Iowa.
