Football (yes, football!)
Griffon Football will host Alumni Weekend this weekend, which includes the Annual Spring Game. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12 in Spratt Memorial Stadium. Admission is free. This year’s game will feature a host of special events, including a series of plays called by Missouri Western President Dr. Robert A. Vartabedian and St. Joseph Mayor Bill McMurray. If you can’t make it, the game will be carried on ESPN 1550.

Baseball
The team split a doubleheader on April 5 against Emporia State and lost to them on April 6. Their record is 14-15 overall and 11-10 in the conference. Baseball will play at home against Northwest Missouri State University April 12-14. The game weekend will also include a reunion for members of the 2000 team.

The men’s golf team played  at the NSIC Regional Preview at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Kansas City, Missouri on April 6.  The team placed seventh in the field of 18 teams with a two-round score of 601.

The men travel to Bolivar, Missouri for their last regular-season meet for the Southwest Baptist Spring Tournament at the Silo Ridge Golf Club. The MIAA Championships begin April 24.

Women’s Golf
Women’s golf played at the Central Region Spring Preview in Springfield, Missouri on April 8 and 9. Missouri Western ended the first round at the Rivercut Golf Course in 13th place with a score of 329. The second round on two saw them advance three places to finish 10th in the preview.

Missouri Western is one of seven MIAA schools. Chong Yong was the number one in the Missouri Western lineup in Shi Qing Ong’s absence. She finished in ninth place.

Softball
With its third straight doubleheader sweep last week, the softball team stretched its win streak to six games and leapfrogged several teams in the MIAA standings into fourth place. Then, a winning doubleheader this week against Southwest Baptist advanced that to eight games.

The Griffons are now 26-14 overall and 13-5 in the MIAA.

They play a doubleheader in Joplin against Missouri Southern State University at 4 and 6 p.m. April 12 and at noon and 2 p.m. April 13 against Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Tennis
After winning the first two matches in a three-match home stretch, Missouri Western (10-11, 1-6 MIAA) suffered a 5-2 defeat to Southwest Baptist University (9-5, 5-2 MIAA) on Sunday. The Griffons held a 1-0 advantage heading into singles, but the Bearcats took five of the six singles matches for the win.

Next up, the Griffons play at noon Saturday, April 13 at Fort Hays State University in Fort Hays, Kansas and at 1 p.m. Monday, April 15 at the University of Nebraska Kearney.

Track & Field
The track & field teams participated in the SBU Bearcat Invite on Saturday, April 6. The women’s team finished fifth out of 15 teams and the men placed eighth out of 14 teams.

Next up, the teams will be in Warrensburg, Missouri on Friday, April 19 for the Mule Relays.
