Griffon football (1-1) scored a 28-17 win at No. 25 Fort Hays State (0-2) on Thursday, Sept. 12. Missouri Western took its first lead early in the second quarter and never looked back on its way to a second consecutive victory over the two-time defending MIAA champs.

The Griffons scored 21 points in the second quarter to take a 21-3 lead into halftime and led 28-9 with 3:22 remaining before the Tigers scored a late touchdown. The Griffons held FHSU to 14 yards rushing on 22 carries and didn’t give up a touchdown until midway through the fourth quarter.

No. 21 University Central Missouri (2-0) visits Spratt Memorial Stadium, Sept. 21 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. UCM scored 70 in a win over Northeastern State last Thursday night and came back to defeat Fort Hays, 34-30 in week one. Saturday’s game will be Military Appreciation and St. Joseph School District Night, and fans will be treated to a postgame fireworks show.

Men’s Golf
The men’s golf team went through two rounds at the 21st Annual NSU Invitational on Monday. As a team, the Griffons placed 13th out of a 16-team field with a team score of 581.

Jett Simmons led the way for the Griffons through day one with a two-round score of 140. He scored a team-low 68 in round one followed by a 74 in round two. He is currently tied for 15th place heading into the final round.

Matt Thoms and Jake Mikesch shot combined scores of 146 and 148, respectively. Thoms is currently tied for 48th, while Mikesch is tied for 58th.

Lucas Horseman was right behind Mikesch with a score of 149, while Preston Ewing finished day one with a combined score of 151.

The Griffons finish play in the NSU Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Women’s Soccer
Griffon soccer (1-2-1) got its first goals and first win of the 2019 season on Sunday, Sept. 15, dispatchinghttps://www.missouriwestern.edu/alumni/wp-content/uploads/sites/89/2019/09/Volleyball-9-17-19.jpg Sioux Falls 2-1. Ashley Mathis scored both the Griffon goals in the first half. Mathis snapped the program’s longest season opening scoreless streak in the 26th minute off a Madison Utley corner kick.

The team’s Sept. 13 game against Wayne State ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Griffons host Missouri Southern (1-3) on Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. The Lions will be coming off a 4-3 two-overtime loss to East Central. Northwest Missouri State (1-2-1) comes to Spratt Memorial Stadium on Sept. 22.

 Women’s Volleyball
Griffon Volleyball (5-1) split two matches on its first day at the Drury Invitational, sweeping the host team, Drury (2-6), before being swept by former MIAA rival Truman State (3-3).

Lauren Murphy became the seventh Griffon Volleyball player to record 3,000 career assists, achieving the milestone with 30 assists against Drury. She ended the day with 3,039 for her career, good for seventh all-time at MWSU.

In the next day’s play, a win against Colorado Mesa gave the team its first 6-1 start since the 2006 season. The Griffons closed out the Drury Invitational with a four-set loss to No. 7 Northern State to come home 6-2.

Missouri Western jumps into MIAA play with a trip to current No. 18 Northwest Missouri State (6-1) on Sept. 18 before finally making its home debut on Sept. 20 against No. 12 University of Central Missouri.
