Supporting Your Student

Parents and family members play an important role in the success of incoming students. As students transition to their life on campus, we recognize that this is also a transition for you. This page is designed to include various information and resources that can help you prepare to support your student in their journey as a Missouri Western Griffon.

Parent Checklist

Missouri Western is committed to protecting the privacy of student education records. Once students are registered in classes at MWSU they control the release of their information. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) says that a student’s educational records are confidential and will only be shared with school officials who have a legitimate education interest, like academic advisors; in connection with the receipt of financial aid; to federal, state or local education authorities or accrediting agencies; and in health or safety emergencies. MWSU also has established “directory information” which will be released upon a public request.

Students can authorize MWSU to allow access to their academic and/or financial records for anyone they choose – parents, a spouse, family or friend. If a student wants to grant access to their academic records, they must sign Federal Buckley permission forms, which are located in their online orientation module.

The Griffon Alert system is designed to enhance and improve communication so that all members of the Missouri Western campus community can stay informed in the event of an emergency or campus closure due to weather. The system is designed for students, staff and faculty only, but each student may add additional emails and phone numbers for family members who wish to receive alerts.

The Family Newsletter is the best way to stay connected to what is happening at Missouri Western while your student is away. Subscribe to the newsletter to hear about upcoming events like Family Weekend and important campus updates.

Students can register up to four immediate family members to receive free admission to all home Griffon Games through the Max Experience.
