The Department of Criminal Justice & Legal Studies, the Legal Studies Association, the Criminal Justice Association, the Law & Enforcement Academy, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion, and the St. Joseph Human Rights Commission will be hosting an event titled, Families in Focus: Empowering Children Amidst Parental Incarceration on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 in Spratt Rooms 214 & 216.

Our keynote Speaker is the CEO and Founder of We Got Us Now, a national non-profit advocacy organization, dedicated to supporting the children of incarcerated parents nationwide. The visit of Ms. Ebony Underwood presents a valuable opportunity for our students, faculty, and community members to gain insights into the challenges faced by these children in our society and to explore effective strategies for addressing the issues they face. Fulbright Scholar In Residence and child law expert, Professor Asha Bajpai, and Warden Angela Mesmer of the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center, are also scheduled to speak at this event.

Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. The event scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 12:15 p.m. The event will be followed by a networking luncheon.

This event will provide students with a unique educational opportunity to learn directly from prominent figures in the field of children’s rights advocacy. This is also an excellent professional development opportunity for faculty, staff and members of the community. By attending this event, individuals can deepen their understanding of children’s rights issues and gain insights into effective advocacy strategies.

Interested persons are kindly asked to RSVP by emailing ereese@missouriwestern.edu by April 12, 2024.
