Since 2004, more than 200 Missouri Western students have participated in our study away program. The series provides students access to art, architecture, art history and design. Becoming briefly immersed in another culture informs students about events outside of their daily life. Nothing compares to the personal experience of actually seeing an artwork, observing how it is made and how artists incurred and solved problems constructing it. Nothing can prepare a student for the feeling of age and tradition that a site from antiquity holds. Our study away program accomplishes this by extending the classroom outwards, enabling students to see art from different venues and different situations in the world. In addition to our trips to New York each semester to visit museums and galleries, faculty have taken students to Brussels, Antwerp, Belgium, Rome, Florence, Siena, Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, Paris and their surrounding areas.
