“We get to make a difference in the community, in families and in people’s lives.” That, Annette Weeks says, is why she enjoys her position as director of the Craig School of Business’s Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Western. Since the center opened last fall, Weeks has assisted 90 entrepreneurs working to start a business and 58 existing businesses in the area, and adds about 10 new clients every month.

“There’s a strong need in the area,” Weeks said. “Business owners feel isolated and are seeking support.”

Weeks works with both new and existing owners one on one, and there is no charge for the service.
With startups, the center will help with a business plan and help them avoid common mistakes, and help them figure their projected income to cover expenses. “It’s a fine balance between being practical but keeping the enthusiasm,” she says.

Many existing business owners do not have business training, so she often helps that group with marketing strategies and financials. Often a Missouri Western class will assist a business with a marketing plan, for example, or a faculty member will offer their expertise.

“It’s tremendous for the students; they are helping a real business with a real problem,” she said. “I love that we are able to connect the community with the students and the campus.”
