Children's Lifetime Sports Academy

June 8-12, 2015 | 1:30pm – 5:15pm each day

Academy Application

The Children’s Lifetime Sports Academy (CLSA) was started in 1973 at Missouri Western State University (MWSU) to allow participants the opportunity to interact with Faculty and future Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) in a fun and non-competitive environment. Our goal is to teach the skills, values and appreciations involved in lifetime sports activities which can be utilized throughout life for fun, health and fitness.

8-10 years old will receive basic (introductory) instruction in a number of lifetime sports. Ages 11 and 12 will receive intermediate instruction in lifetime sports with emphasis on outdoor adventure activities. Participants will be placed in the following age appropriate groups:

8 year olds – 9 year olds – 10 year olds – 11 year olds – 12 year olds

Some of the activities we offer include: Canoeing, Rappelling, Fishing, Archery, Obstacle Course, Swimming, Pickle Ball, Racquetball, Badminton, Recreational Games and many others. Due to the unpredictability of the weather some activities may not be offered.

To keep the numbers at a low ratio of instructor to participant we limit enrollment to the first 150 registered participants. It is recommended that you pre-register. If the Academy is not full, registration will take place at the Looney Complex on the first day of camp.

All equipment is furnished by MWSU, HPER Department. However, all participants must furnish their own tennis shoes, swimming suits, towels and change (50 cents) for sno cones. The HPER Department does not supply change.

The Academy is held in the Looney Complex, the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex and surrounding activity fields. Some of the activities may take place at off-campus sites. Students will be transported in college vehicles and college staff will supervise at all times.

The last part of each day will be a free swim session. Certified lifeguards will be provided.

No child may leave the CLSA during the afternoon without written consent from a parent or guardian. The note is to be given to the student’s group counselor the day the student will be leaving early.

The cost of the week-long sports academy is $80.00 for the first child in the family and $70.00 for each additional child. CLSA is non-refundable.

On Friday, parents are invited to visit CLSA and observe, take pictures and visit with the instructors and counselors. Please call (816) 271-4491 for more information.
