Judges' Statement

I would like to say thank you to David Harris and the MWSU Clay guild for affording me the opportunity to select cups for this exhibition and also to all of the artists that submitted work.
I approached the selection process with an openness to considering a diverse range of perspectives and interpretations of the “Twin Cups” theme. I avoided judging pieces based on any particular criterion of beauty or function, but rather I sought out work that seemed confident and resolved in the apparent purpose described by the forms, surfaces and pairings.
There was definitely difficulty in determining the quality of physical objects from photographs. There was some distortion, some white balance issues, and I could rarely see the insides of the work or the bottoms. As a result, I performed a considerable amount of independent research to verify quality where craftsmanship was not easily discernible from the provided images, to get a better feel for the materiality of the work and to seek out context with work that contained highly specific visual language and symbolic content. I made a concerted effort to disregard professional pedigree. I was pleased to see how readily almost all of the submitting artists shared information about their work and considerations online.
I used a ranking system to rearrange the submissions and returned to my arrangements frequently to consider and reconsider the objects in groups of similar quality. Quieter work often gained my appreciation through repeated viewings and very identical pairs in many cases became less interesting. Ultimately, I thought the most successful work appeared both knowledgeable in terms of its relationship to traditional craft, sculptural, or visual practices and tactful in its deliberate departures from these established styles.
I very much enjoyed getting to consider this work, and I have added many new artists to my radar as a result of the experience. I hope you all continue to submit work to organizations that support the arts and foster critical dialogue.
