Off the Table! Clay for the Wall: National Ceramic Exhibition 2017

Juror's Statement

Ceramic objects occupy space; they are dimensional, they have weight and volume. The wall is traditionally the realm of the image, not the object. Ceramic wall-work is exciting for just this reason. When ceramic objects are put on the wall the audience approaches it with fewer assumptions. It is left to the artwork itself to guide the viewer and communicate it’s own context; to define what conceptual realm it occupies. Sculpture, or pottery for that matter, on the wall can operate as an object, which exists in the physical space of the viewer, in which we must contend with the materiality of the clay and glaze, or it can operate as an image, which can transport the viewer, open a window into an illusory space.  Tile, of course is the exception. Tiles become a part of the space itself. They transform the essential quality of the space that they adorn.  The objects in this exhibition exemplify these multiple modes of communication. Many of them are both tile and vessel, or both object and image. These allow the viewer to perceive and experience them in multiple ways.  Many of them are fragmentary and imply a greater whole. Some are humorous, several are beautiful, and all are engaging.  As a juror, it is gratifying to have such a variety and breadth of interesting work from which to assemble an exhibition.
