Judges' Statement

First, thank you to Missouri Western State University's Clay Guild and David Harris for the invitation to be the juror for Twin Cups exhibit and thanks to each artist for the privilege of allowing me to examine your work.

One of the most difficult things about jurying a cup show digitally is the inability to hold and interact with the pieces.  Don’t get me wrong, I love our digital world, but the form of the cup, perhaps more than any other form, is not meant to be experienced on a computer screen.  The haptic considerations of weight, balance, texture, or generally how one would experience it during use are not present. I had to shift my focus to purely visual form and my interpretation of the maker’s intentions, and perhaps how well I thought they communicated these intentions. To fully appreciate what is presented before me I had to imagine all of the things that are otherwise hidden.

It was entertaining to see how so many artists interpreted the theme of making pairs of objects. The most straightforward, and probably most common, is simply to make identical, or nearly identical objects.  I also appreciated those artists who used variations on a theme to create cups that, much like a family, contain members that look related but are distinguished as individuals by variations in line, color, form or other contrasting elements. A final group that I really enjoyed were those who used other objects to tie their cups together most often taking the form of coasters, trays, platforms, and plinths.

A juror’s opinion is only one, so whether you work was selected or not I would encourage to continue to put your work in front of others and of course support organizations that promote the arts and provide opportunities to exhibit. It was highly enjoyable for me to peruse all of your creations and I thank all of you for the opportunity.
