Foster the People’s song rings true for PTA freshman Kelsey McCluskey when it says, “we’re not doing it for the money.”

McCluskey participated and won first place in Western’s 2018 competition of “The Voice.” For her, competing was not just about receiving an award at the end, but rather doing it because it is her passion.

This Western freshman grew up singing in choir, theatre and competitions in high school. Clearly performing on stage is nothing new to McCluskey, however, performing in front of a large university audience really pushed her out of her comfort zone.

McCluskey said not only did her song choice of “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood challenge her, but so did her attempt to perform at a competitive level during the last round of the competition.

McClusky decided to participate in “The Voice” because she wanted to have fun and do something that she loved. She encourages others who are too nervous to take the stage.

“When you see something like this and really want to do it, just go for it,” McClusky said.

McClusky walked away winning $1,000 in competition money. She said she plans on using it for school. She has a love for christian contemporary music as well as country, and is saving up to buy a vinyl.
