Missouri Western’s Student Government Association hosted the SGA Awards Fair.

The fair showcased various Greek and non-Greek organizations on campus. Each organization had a table set up to represent their respective organizations with multiple visual displays. The organizations involved in the SGA fair were Sigma Alpha Iota, Alpha Sigma Alpha and Phi Delta Theta.

Madeline Marx, president of Sigma Alpha Iota, expressed that this was her first year participating in the fair. Marx represented the organization along with three other members.

“Sigma Alpha Iota is the women’s music fraternity for Missouri Western,” Marx said. “It’s an international fraternity and we have 20 members. The fair is for an awards committee to review the organizations that are up for awards and to see what they are about.”

The organizations had the opportunity to explain why they felt they deserved the awards. Sarah Bennett, who has been a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha for four years, is hoping the sorority will be chosen for the awards they applied for.

“We applied for outstanding sorority, most spirited Griffon, a community service award and one more award,” Bennet said. “SGA sends a packet with all of the different awards in it and we go through and pick out which awards we want to apply for. You have to write out why you want to apply and why you should win the award. We will be notified if we won any of the awards at the SGA banquet.”

Five judges examined the information provided by each organization and listened to each organization’s accomplishments. Each organization had a table to layout any information, photos, pictures and props on display for the judges to view. Each organization gave a short presentation and overview of their organization, activities they have done and plan to do. They also answered any questions the judges had.

SGA Administrative Coordinator Jessica Frogge assisted in the judging process.

“We try to find judges that are not apart of organizations and I believe our bylaws say that we have to have two faculty and staff and three students,” Frogge said. “They are given a criterion for each award and they are looking for whatever those criteria are. They match them up to see what awards fits the organization the best.”

The awards banquet was held on April 19 and the winners of the awards were given trophies and plaques. The names of the organizations will be recognized on a plaque outside of the SGA office.
