Shelter-in-Place Guidance

  • Shelter-in-place is a protective action used when it is safer to remain indoors rather than evacuate. This may occur during emergencies such as hazardous material releases, severe weather, civil unrest, or other threats where leaving the building may increase risk. When shelter-in-place is directed:
    • Move indoors immediately
    • Stay inside the building until official guidance is provided
    • Avoid windows and exterior doors when possible
    • Relocate to an interior room or hallway, if appropriate
    • Monitor official University communications for updates
    • Follow instructions from University Police or emergency responders

Shelter-in-place procedures may vary depending on the type of emergency. In some situations, shelter-in-place may involve securing doors and limiting building access.

    Building Coordinators

Building Coordinators may assist with communication and situational awareness by reporting building concerns and supporting coordination efforts when safe and appropriate.
