Evacuation Guidance

Evacuation is one of the most common protective actions used during emergencies such as fire alarms, gas leaks, hazardous material incidents, or other threats requiring individuals to leave a building.

When evacuating a campus facility:

  • Immediately exit the building when alarms activate or evacuation is directed
  • Use the nearest safe exit route
  • Do not use elevators unless directed by emergency personnel
  • Assist others if it is safe to do so
  • Move away from the building to allow emergency responders access
  • Follow instructions from University Police, emergency personnel, or building coordinators

Individuals should remain outside until the building is cleared for re-entry by authorized personnel.

MoWest encourages departments to incorporate evacuation awareness into onboarding and periodic safety reminders. Evacuation drills may be conducted periodically to ensure preparedness.

If you need support evaluating evacuation routes or assembly locations for your department, please contact the Office of Risk Management and Safety.

Building Coordinators

During an evacuation, Building Coordinators may assist with promoting orderly evacuation, helping ensure assigned areas are cleared when safe to do so, and reporting concerns to emergency personnel. Building Coordinators serve as support personnel and do not replace emergency responders.

Individuals should remain outside until the building is cleared for re-entry by authorized personnel.

Departments are encouraged to review evacuation routes and incorporate evacuation awareness into onboarding and routine safety reminders.
