“I found myself staying after class every day to discuss the day’s philosophical topics with Dr. Okapal.”

Aubry (White) Carpenter, Philosophy Major, Religion Minor

Major: Philosophy; Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations; Religion minor
Hometown: St. Joseph, Missouri

When she walked into a freshman philosophy class during her first semester at Missouri Western, Aubry had no idea that it would spark a passion for philosophy. “Sometimes people don’t regard philosophy as a relevant field of study, but I wholeheartedly disagree! The subjects are fascinating, and you develop critical-thinking skills that can be applied in real life.”

“I found myself staying after class every day to discuss the day’s philosophical topics with Dr. Okapal.”

One day, Dr. Okapal asked, “Since you are so interested in Philosophy, why don’t you declare it as your major?” So she did.

Philosophy works as a standalone major, but it also complements a wide range of other degrees. By pairing philosophy and communications, Aubry feels she was very well prepared to enter the workforce. “Being able to study both sides of communication – the rhetoric in Communication Studies and logic and critical thinking in Philosophy – I am able to look at communication and messaging from all angles, which is an invaluable tool in the public relations and marketing field.”

Not only did Aubry fall in love with philosophy, she fell in love with Missouri Western. “I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to come back and work at my alma mater in the Public Relations and Marketing Department.”
