Dr. Vaughn Nelson, former director of the Alternative Energy Institute at West Texas A&M University, will talk about wind energy at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 in Murphy Hall, room 224, on the campus of Missouri Western State University. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Dr. Nelson has more than 30 years of experience in wind energy research. He served as director of the Alternative Energy Institute from its inception in 1977 until 2003. He has been principal investigator of several national and state renewable energy projects, and has served as a consultant to several wind industry companies.

Among his numerous honors and awards, Dr. Nelson received the Wind Powering America Outstanding Wind Leadership in Education award in 2013, was named a Texas Wind Legend by the Texas Renewable Industries Association in 2010 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Wind Energy Association in 2003.

Dr. Nelson received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) in 1957, a Master of Education from Harvard University in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from the University of Kansas in 1967.
