The Board of Governors at Missouri Western State University has adopted a policy regarding tailgating prior to Griffon football games. Consistent with an increasing number of colleges and universities, including those in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the new policy allows the possession and consumption of alcohol. The policy will be in place for the first home football game Saturday, Sept. 14 vs. Missouri S&T.

“A vibrant tailgating scene adds much to the festive atmosphere on our campus,” said Shana Meyer, vice president for student affairs. “We think this comprehensive tailgating policy will encourage more fans to make Griffon game day a special event while also encouraging responsible decision-making for those who choose to partake.”

The policy designates Lots H and I for tailgating, with Lot J as visitors’ overflow parking. Lots will open four hours prior to the event and must be cleared within 90 minutes of the event’s end.

The following rules apply to the possession and consumption of alcohol during tailgating:

  • Tailgating and consumption of alcohol shall cease no later than 30 minutes after the event begins.
  • Kegs and other common bulk containers are not allowed. Beverages must be packaged in containers of one liter or less in volume. No glass containers are allowed. All alcoholic drinks should be poured into plastic cups for consumption.
  • Alcohol possession and consumption may take place only in parking lots I, H & J.
  • No one under the age of 21 is permitted to consume or possess alcohol; alcohol should be consumed in moderation and in a responsible manner. Binge drinking or drinking to excess is prohibited.
  • Anyone possessing or consuming alcohol shall carry valid photo identification establishing that he or she is 21 years of age or older and comply with a request to show such identification when requested by law enforcement, security personnel or a university official.
  • Drinking games or other activities designed to promote excess drinking are prohibited.
  • No one may possess or consume alcohol from any device or apparatus designed to speed the consumption of alcohol (including but not limited to funnels or beer bongs).
  • The sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.
  • Failure to comply with this policy may result in criminal charges, loss of tailgating privileges, and/or student disciplinary charges. Parking lots will be monitored for compliance with the tailgating policy, Missouri Western’s Code of Conduct and state law.
  • Widespread or blatant noncompliance with this policy may result in the immediate revocation of the policy for future events.
  • MWSU assumes no liability or responsibility for any issues that result from the use, possession or consumption of alcohol on its premises.
