Members of Missouri Western's Jazz Combo performed at the second annual meeting of the Missouri Western Arts Society May 8. The Arts Society has raised $45,000 to support the university's arts programs since it formed in 2011

In its first two years of existence the Missouri Western Arts Society has allocated almost $45,000 in private support to arts programs at Missouri Western State University.

“These funds are providing equipment, scholarships and educational opportunities that might not otherwise be available to Missouri Western students,” said Bill Wright, chair of the Arts Society Council. “We are beginning to make a difference in the academic lives of the students. And indeed, we’ve only just begun.”

The Missouri Western Arts Society was founded in 2011 to supplement the annual budgets of arts programs, encourage attendance at performances and exhibitions, and let people know about the great art opportunities available through Missouri Western.

The Society so far has funded 16 projects totaling $44,681. Some of the major projects include the purchase of an electric kiln for the art department, scholarships for the music department and theatre program, and production assistance for last December’s production of “Annie” and the upcoming opera production of “The Magic Flute.”

The third annual membership drive for the Arts Society will begin in June. For information on joining, contact Laura Buhman, development officer, at 816-271-5920 or buhman@missouriwestern.edu.
