Missouri Western State University awarded scholarships to seven local high school students at the annual Foreign Language Day, April 9.

Every year the foreign language department invites high school students who are studying Chinese, French or Spanish to compete in a variety of language-related activities. This year, 215 high school students attended the competition which consisted of a poetry recitation, a quiz bowl, impromptu skits and video commercials. The following students were awarded scholarships:

St. Joseph Central High School: Tabitha Tolen, Webster Dyer and Marco Machado

Liberty (Mo.) North High School: Bettina Jin

Smithville (Mo.) High School: Ben Hartman and Taylor Tipin

Maur Hill Mount Academy, Atchison, Kan.: Austen Geenes
