International Week of Deaf People

Recognized globally by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and its national associations, this celebration occurs during the last full week of September, culminating in the National Day of the Deaf this coming Sunday, September 22nd, 2024.

This year’s theme, “Sign up for Sign Language Rights”, highlights the important role sign languages play in promoting equality and access for everyone.

Now is the perfect opportunity to educate ourselves and others about Deaf culture, celebrate the achievements of Deaf individuals in our community, and advocate for their rights both locally and globally. We encourage you to explore the links below to learn more about the rich history and culture of the Deaf community.

Take some time this week to honor Deaf culture and expand your knowledge by learning some basic sign language at the links below, and share a video of yourself signing a phrase or two for a chance to win a prize! One lucky participant will be selected to receive a special gift from the Accessibility Resource Center ( ARC). (send videos to arc@missouriwestern.edu)
