The St. Joseph Curling Club, created by Missouri Western State University and the city of St. Joseph, will hold its third “Learn to Curl” events at 8:30, 9 and 9:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 21, at the Bode Ice Arena, 2500 SW Parkway, at a cost of $15. Space is limited. Call the Bode Ice Arena at 816-271-5506 to reserve a spot.

Learn to Curl consists of 30 minutes of off-ice training and 60 minutes of on-ice training. People who have previously attended the off-ice training portion of the event can do just the on-ice portion for $10.

Curling is a Winter Olympics sport. Players slide stones weighing approximately 42 pounds across ice toward a target. Two sweepers then influence the path and distance of the slide by sweeping in front of the sliding stone. Missouri Western’s department of health, physical education and recreation recently acquired stones, brooms and other equipment needed to play the sport.

Participants should dress in tennis shoes and warm clothing that allows easy movement. All other equipment will be provided.
