three tutors show crla certification

Hailey Crane, Molly Luthans and Reece Sacksteder have achieved Level 1 CRLA Certification.

Feb. 13, 2023–Three Missouri Western State University tutors have achieved their Level 1 College Reading and Learning Association certification. In order to be certified, math tutor Hailey Crane and writing tutors Molly Luthans and Reece Sacksteder undertook at least 10 hours of training and 25 hours of tutoring experience which utilizes that training.

“We take tutoring seriously,” said Susan Garrison, Director and Writing Coordinator at the Center for Academic Support (CAS). “Being a good tutor is more than just being good in a subject area or willing to help others. One-on-one instruction is the oldest form of teaching—and learning—known to humans, and like any skill or art, practice and instruction can enhance your ability to tutor.”

The certification also means that the CAS is connected to current trends in higher education, Garrison said. Research consistently documents the positive effects of tutoring. The CAS was the first institution in Missouri to be certified, and one of over 1,000 programs worldwide currently licensed to certify its trained tutors.

Crane is a sophomore business major from Kennesaw, Georgia; Luthans is a junior education major from St. Joseph; and Sacksteder is a sophomore education major from Carthage, Missouri.
