Military Order of the Purple HeartOct. 29, 2019—Missouri Western State University will accept designation as a Purple Heart University by the Military Order of the Purple Heart during a ceremony at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the Walter Cronkite Memorial inside Spratt Hall. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

The Purple Heart University designation recognizes Missouri Western’s commitment to supporting military veterans, especially those wounded or killed in the line of duty, and their families.

The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded or killed by an enemy combatant. The organization now known as the Military Order of the Purple Heart was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration.

Missouri Western was recognized as a Bronze Level Military Friendly School by VIQTORY this year for the opportunities provided to veterans and their families. Missouri Western is VA approved as a training facility for veterans and eligible persons, and is a Yellow Ribbon Program participant. To provide a pathway to a custom bachelor’s degree for military veterans, Missouri Western offers a Bachelor of Science in Technology that uses 30 credit hours of military training. The University offers college classes on base for members of the 139th Airlift Wing of the Missouri Air National Guard at Rosecrans Memorial Airport.
