As the fall 2018 semester starts at Missouri Western State University, preliminary enrollment data indicates more than 1,050 incoming freshmen are beginning their college career, an increase of approximately 7 percent over last year and more than 22 percent higher than it was in fall 2016.
“To see this kind of growth in freshman enrollment in back-to-back years is remarkable,” said Dr. Paul Orscheln, associate vice president for enrollment management and student retention. “Following up a double-digit percentage increase last year with a 7 percent increase this year should lead to a more stable enrollment picture in years to come.”
“In my 40 years in higher education, I’ve not seen anything like the growth we’ve seen in freshman enrollment the last two years,” said Dr. Robert Vartabedian, Missouri Western’s president. “It’s a testament not only to the great work by Paul and his staff in admissions, but the entire campus in making Missouri Western a top choice for more and more high school seniors.”
Interest in Missouri Western remains high, with freshman applications for fall 2018 up more than 35 percent from a year ago. Since fall 2016, applications are up 103 percent. Campus visits are up 45 percent over the last two years.
Overall enrollment, both in headcount and credit hours, is also projected to rise again. Enrollment numbers will be finalized after the official census date four weeks into the semester.
