Graduate programs were created at Missouri Western State University in 2007. An editorial in the St. Joseph News-Press on March 7 recognizes this milestone:

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the first graduate programs at Missouri Western, and that step seems significant in the life of the university, the city and the region. The offering of master’s degrees increased the stature of the St. Joseph institution, and it provided a local outlet through which people here could expand their educations and increase pay potential and capabilities in the workplace.
