Students in the Opera Workshop at Missouri Western State University will perform scenes from “Ragtime: The Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 in the Potter Hall Theater. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Ragtime” portrays social conflict in 1915 New York City between the wealthy white manufacturing families, European immigrants and socially rising black families. The love story of ragtime piano player Coalhouse Walker and shy Sarah is central to the tale with notables such as Booker T Washington, Harry Houdini, Admiral Perry and a multitude of other rich characters of this time period making appearances. The musical’s book is by Terrance McNally, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. The original Broadway production won four Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.
