A Missouri Western State University student has been named Missouri’s Student Employee of the Year by the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators. Alex Atkinson, senior speech communication major of Archie, Missouri, served as an intern for new student programs in the Missouri Western Office of Admissions.

“Alex’s leadership can be summed up in one word: inspiring,” said Kristin Neeley, assistant director of new student programs and Atkinson’s supervisor. “He inspires students to look beyond the classroom by looking into leadership opportunities on campus. He also inspires faculty and staff to look at students as equals. He inspires me to constantly grow and try to make a difference in my community.”

Among other duties, Atkinson recruited, hired and trained 30 student leaders for summer registration programs and 50 student leaders for Griffon Edge, Missouri Western’s 3-day orientation program for new students, Neeley said.

Atkinson was selected as Missouri Western’s Student Employee of the Year. Campus winners were then submitted for consideration for state and national honors. There were 920 total nominations received across member campuses in the region and 53 nominations submitted for state and regional consideration. For being named the state student employee of the year, Atkinson received $75.

Missouri Western’s Student Employment Supervisor of the Year was Jamie Sweiger, also in the Office of Admissions.
