Fatal Consequences of Distracted Driving, 1-3 p.m.

Kimberly Schlau began her speaking career after her daughters, Jessica and Kelli Uhl, were killed by a speeding Illinois State Trooper when he lost control of his vehicle while talking on his personal cell phone. Her presentation covers the events of the day Jessica and Kelli were killed, the subsequent investigation and the emotional toll on her and her family. She hopes her story can impact officers on a personal level, reminding them of the tragic yet avoidable consequences of unnecessary high speed during pursuits and responses. Autism Recognition and Response for Law Enforcement and Other First Responders, 3-5 p.m.

At the completion of this 2-hour POST Program approved course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize communication, behavioral and sensory integration difficulties for persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder
  2. Be prepared to manage the sensory climate to de-escalate behavior
  3. Be aware of risks associated with a wandering incident and restraint and custody of person with ASD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder now affects one in 68 children, and persons with autism are seven times more likely to come into contact with law enforcement than their typical peers.
