The Western Institute at Missouri Western State University will accept registration for summer driver’s education classes by mail or in person beginning April 1 and continuing through May 2. The cost is $75 per student for students who meet eligibility requirements. Registration forms are available at www.missouriwestern.edu/drivered.

This is the first time registrations have been accepted by mail. The goal is to cut down on the long lines that formed in the past when registration opened. Forms may be mailed to Missouri Western State University, Conferences and Special Programs, 4525 Downs Dr., St. Joseph, MO 64507, or delivered in person to the Western Institute office in Spratt Hall, room 105 during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Driver’s education is a program of the Western Institute and the St. Joseph School District. There will be two sessions offered, June 2-13 and July 7-18. Students will receive 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of observation time in the vehicle and 6 hours behind the wheel. The normal class time is 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. Driving and observation times will be arranged with the instructor and may be scheduled outside the dates the class meets (through June 18 for the first session or July 23 for the second).

The student must be 15 to 19 years old (photocopy of birth certificate required), be currently enrolled in school and not have graduated from high school. There are spots available for students who don’t meet these requirements for $225. Students do not need any kind of driving permit for this class.
