Gov. Jay Nixon was among the speakers at the dedication of the Walter Cronkite Memorial on Nov. 4, 2013.

While most of the Missouri Western State University campus will be closed for the University’s winter break from 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 to 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, the newly installed Walter Cronkite Memorial in the atrium of Spratt Hall will be open to visitors.

“This is a great opportunity for families with kids home from school or visitors from out of town to learn about an American icon who was born right here in St. Joseph,” said Jerry Pickman, vice president for University Advancement. “I think they will find the memorial interesting and informative.”

The Memorial’s normal hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the Memorial will be open 9 a.m. to noon. It will be closed Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission is always free.

The Walter Cronkite Memorial was dedicated on Nov. 4, 2013. The 5,000 square-foot display features many images, artifacts and videos about the legendary CBS anchorman and the historic events he covered. Cronkite was born in St. Joseph on Nov. 4, 1916.
