{"id":4570,"date":"2019-07-03T14:53:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-03T19:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/yearbook\/?p=4570"},"modified":"2020-08-19T09:32:34","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T14:32:34","slug":"the-golden-pen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/yearbook\/2019\/07\/03\/the-golden-pen\/","title":{"rendered":"The Golden Pen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By: Christian Sarna<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Kwame Dawes, esteemed poet and Emmy award winner, performed a public reading of his work with accompaniment from the Western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/tcd\/\" class=\"broken_link\">dance<\/a> students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cVerse &amp; Twirl: An Evening with Kwame Dawes and MWSU Dancers\u201d was a collaborative effort between the English and modern languages department and the department of theatre, cinema and dance. It took place in the packed Potter Hall Theater with a line of cars stretching around the building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Dawes worked with dance students on interpretive choreography of his poems. These poems addressed subjects such as racism, mourning and identity. Dawes expressed his happiness with the collaboration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThis has been a wonderful opportunity,\u201d Dawes said. \u201cTo work with the dancers and meet with the staff for the journal, it\u2019s been fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Western dance students performed interpretative routines to two of Dawes\u2019 poems. The dancers were led by Marla Heeler, adjunct faculty of dance at Western and owner and director of The Dance Arts Center, LLC. Heeler expressed her pride in the dancers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cI was thrilled with my students,\u201d Heeler said. \u201cThey won\u2019t have that opportunity again.\u201d One of her dance students, Libby Denny, was grateful for the chance to collaborate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe don\u2019t get to choreograph to stuff like that very often,\u201d Denny said. \u201cWorking together to create the pieces and find the meaning in his poems was fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Dawes has authored 35 books of poetry, fiction, criticism and essays and continues to write. He spent most of his life in Jamaica and won a 2009 Emmy for an interactive site based on his project \u201cHOPE: Living and loving with AIDS in Jamaica.\u201d He started the evening with a Jamaican folk song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWrite my name; write my name up there,\u201d Dawes sang. \u201cYou could touch my finger on the golden pen and write my name up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Dawes is currently a professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and editor-in-chief of Prairie Schooner Magazine. For Marianne Kunkel, assistant professor of English, the event was a way to thank her mentor. Kunkel worked alongside Dawes as the managing editor of the Prairie Schooner during her time as a graduate student.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cI learned so much from him at the University of Nebraska,\u201d Kunkel said. \u201cFor him, today seemed very joyful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Kunkel is the current editor-in-chief of Mochila Review, a student-written undergraduate journal published with support from the English and modern languages department. This event unveiled their 2019 issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Anne Davies-Speer, a non-traditional student and public relations and community outreach coordinator for Mochila Review, was inspired by Dawes even before his reading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ge gf ct bg gg b gh la gj lb lc ld le lf lg lh gr\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Earlier in the day, her publishing class had gone out to lunch with him.
