At Missouri Western State University,
everything is possible.
As Missouri’s official applied learning university, it is our mission to ensure our students achieve excellence in the classroom and beyond. Applied learning possibilities are woven into the heart of the University and shape your education by allowing you to engage with the St. Joseph region and the world. You have the opportunity to learn by doing through our five Missouri Western experiences:
Internships enhance your education by allowing you to experience real-world possibilities. An internship lets you get an insider’s view of your chosen field and gain important professional contacts.
See what opportunities await!

Students have gained career experience at these incredible organizations:
At Missouri Western, your opportunities to engage in research start early in your undergraduate studies. You work beside your professors on real research projects, something other schools reserve for graduate students.
Each semester you will have the opportunity to present your projects at the Multidisciplinary Research Day, where you can share your results with a vast audience. This event also provides a chance for you to explore research in a variety of disciplines.
You can choose to participate in research over the fall, spring or summer semesters, and some positions are paid!
Your classroom can go beyond our campus in St. Joseph when you turn your education into an international adventure! The study abroad experience provides an extraordinary opportunity for you to study in a different environment and gain first-hand exposure to other countries, cultures and societies. (And still graduate on time!)
Real-life student adventures:
Students have studied and explored in the following countries (just to name a few):
Go wherever you want! We work with institutions all over the world to ensure you can study in the country you desire. Missouri Western also has exchange agreements with nine universities in six countries. Participation in one of Missouri Western’s international exchange programs will provide you with the most-affordable way to study abroad.
Your possibilities to give back through service learning are a fundamental part of the success of local businesses, community services and nonprofit organizations. Service learning is included in classes whenever possible. Whether you are a beginner or a veteran volunteer, Missouri Western provides opportunities to match your service interest.
Go on an alternative spring break trip!
Travel to communities such as New Orleans and St. Louis to volunteer during spring break! While on the service trip, volunteer at local schools, nursing homes, animal shelters and many other community organizations.
Students have made a difference all over our community. Here is a sampling of the organizations:
No matter what your interests, Missouri Western has a leadership possibility for you. Our students graduate with the desire and ability to work within diverse communities of people. At Missouri Western, students understand that leadership isn’t a class or a one-time event, but a lifetime commitment.
How do I get started?
Get involved. During your first week of classes, come to the Western Warm-Up festival at the Griffon Plaza. This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the student organizations on campus. We want you to find organizations that interest you. When you join a club or organization that sparks your interest, a passion develops and a leader is born.
