Students are considered \u201cpre-majors\u201d until they meet the minimum requirements to be accepted as a social work major. Admission to the social work program involves the completion of an application packet online at <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriwestern.tevera.app\/#\/logon\">https:\/\/missouriwestern.tevera.app\/#\/logon<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Minimum requirements for admission into the social work major include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of the general studies math requirement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of ENG108 or ETC 200 general studies requirement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of BIO101 (or equivalent)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of SOC230<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of SWK250, SOC110, PSY101, and ENG108 with a minimum grade of C in each course<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must have earned a C or better in all completed SWK prefix classes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must agree to and conduct themselves in a manner consistent with accepted professional social work practices and the current NASW Code of Ethics (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/social-work\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/171\/2018\/02\/SW-Student-Handbook.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Work Student Handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannot have exhibited behavior that will infringe on their present or future ability to adequately fulfill professional social work responsibilities. The social work program\u2019s admissions committee reserves the right to require applicants to submit additional materials if the Committee questions the student\u2019s ability to adequately fulfill professional responsibilities (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/social-work\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/171\/2018\/02\/SW-Student-Handbook.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Work Student Handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannot have violated the University Code of Conduct\/Student Disciplinary Code<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students must be accepted into the social work program prior to enrolling in SWK360 unless a student has spoken to the social faculty advisor and plans to submit their application concurrently with taking SWK360. The formal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/missouriwestern.tevera.app\/#\/logon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application packet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an Application Form, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/social-work\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/171\/2025\/06\/Social-Work-Application-Personal-Statement.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal Statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, three letters of reference, a signed Social Work Handbook Form and Code of Ethics Form) must be submitted by the <\/span><b>first Friday in October or March<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The social work admissions committee will review application materials and interview all applicants. Admission decisions are based on a student\u2019s:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview responses,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academic performance,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/social-work\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/171\/2025\/06\/Social-Work-Application-Personal-Statement.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal statements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete and pass a criminal background check,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">references,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application responses, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prior personal and academic conduct.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All members of the admissions committee, by a simple majority vote, will then make one of the following decisions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To unconditionally accept a student into the program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conditionally accept a student into the program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To place a student on probationary status or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To deny formal acceptance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students may appeal admission decisions based on criteria contained in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/social-work\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/171\/2025\/07\/Student-Handbook-2025-2026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Work Student Handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The social work program does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, age, creed, ethnic or national origin, disability, or political or sexual orientation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once admitted to the social work program, social work majors are expected to maintain professional and academic standards of conduct. The social work program at Missouri Western reserves the right to place a student on probationary status or remove a student from the major because of violations of these standards in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/social-work\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/171\/2025\/07\/Student-Handbook-2025-2026.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Work Student Handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs nav-justified\"><li><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-26a518997acf2603c62\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-practicum\" href=\"#tab-26a518997acf2603c62\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\"><i class=\"fontawesome-icon fa-cogs fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"font-size:20px;\"><\/i>Practicum<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-practicum\" id=\"tab-26a518997acf2603c62\">\n<p>Social work majors must successfully complete a second formal admissions process before entering SWK 480 &#8211; Practicum in Social Work and SWK 485 &#8211; Social Work Practicum Seminar. To be eligible to enroll in SWK 480 and SWK 485, students must have earned a minimum grade of C in all SWK prefix courses and carry a minimum overall GPA of 2.50. In addition, students must continue to meet the professional and academic standards of conduct outlined previously.<\/p>\n<p>The application process includes submission of a pre-professional resume (outline available from the Field Coordinator), completion of a field application, and interviews with the Field Coordinator and with prospective field instructors (agency social workers). Practicum planning regularly begins one or two semesters prior to entering the practicum. While every effort is made to identify those students ready for field practicum, it is the student&#8217;s responsibility to notify the Field Coordinator of his\/her intent to apply to the social work practicum.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs nav-justified\"><li><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-a0e2f54ab1dd97e3c8e\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-graduationrequirements\" href=\"#tab-a0e2f54ab1dd97e3c8e\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\"><i class=\"fontawesome-icon fa-graduation-cap fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"font-size:20px;\"><\/i>Graduation Requirements<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-graduationrequirements\" id=\"tab-a0e2f54ab1dd97e3c8e\">\n<div class=\"column one\">\n<div class=\"inner-padding\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students must maintain certain standards to graduate with a BSW. The Admissions Committee will use the summary to assess your basic writing skills and to help them arrive at a decision about your admission application.
