{"id":2038,"date":"2014-03-06T08:57:54","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T14:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lamp1.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/?p=2038"},"modified":"2019-06-04T16:20:40","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T21:20:40","slug":"missouri-western-celebrates-womens-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/2014\/03\/06\/missouri-western-celebrates-womens-history-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Missouri Western Celebrates Women&#8217;s History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Economics, Political Science and Sociology and the Center for Multicultural Education at Missouri Western State University are hosting a series of events in March to commemorate Women\u2019s History Month. All events are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s event series is focused on the theme that \u2018gender is inescapable,\u2019\u201d said Dr. Melinda Kov\u00e1cs, assistant professor of political science. \u201cI chose this emphasis to drive home the point that gender is a feature of every human life. It is a social construction and a collection of social roles and norms and every single one of us comes into contact with those every day.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The events illustrate some variety of settings in which people \u201cperform\u201d gender, Dr. Kov\u00e1cs said. Events include a film series showing people in different settings negotiating gender as well as two roundtable discussions that will feature personal narratives from local people about their own journeys. The keynote address this year will be delivered by Dr. Celia Winkler, professor of sociology at the University of Montana. Her talk will focus on how gender is relevant in the area of welfare policy and how in fact welfare policy enforces certain views and norms of gender on individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The series events in chronological order are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>7 p.m. Monday, March 3, Film Series: \u201cKinky Boots,\u201d Hoff Conference Rooms, Blum Student Union rooms 218-219<\/li>\n<li>7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, Film Series: \u201cMust Love Dogs,\u201d Hoff Conference Rooms, Blum Student Union rooms 218-219<\/li>\n<li>2 p.m. Monday, March 17, Community Service.
