That will set me apart when I apply for acceptance into graduate programs and later, professional positions.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe opportunities provided by Missouri Western State University and the Summer and Gold Fridays Biology PORTAL (Program of Research, Teaching, and Applied Learning) have been fundamental to supporting this research, and we are very grateful to MWSU and its Administration,\u201d Dr. Barta said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/Plants-logo.png\" alt=\"plants journal logo\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/Plants-logo-200x100.png 200w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/Plants-logo-310x155.png 310w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/Plants-logo.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, Zahnd\u2019s work on the project was funded by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) through a winning Summer Undergraduate Research Program proposal in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The researchers looked at the interactions between Amur honeysuckle, an invasive species in U.S. woodlands, and seeds of the field mustard plant. The honeysuckle succeeds as an invasive species in part because it makes and releases chemicals that inhibit the germination of other seeds. Researchers found that higher concentrations of a plant hormone called gibberellic acid in the mustard seeds may help reduce the inhibiting effects of those chemicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The paper titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2223-7747\/12\/5\/1014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe First Evidence of Gibberellic Acid\u2019s Ability to Modulate Target Species\u2019 Sensitivity to Honeysuckle (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lonicera maackii<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) Allelochemicals\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was published in Plants, an international journal published by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Missouri Western State University is a student-centered learning community preparing individuals for lives of excellence through applied learning.
