Dr. Nuchelle Chance, assistant professor of psychology, received the grant through the APA\u2019s Commission on Ethnic Minority Recruitment, Retention and Training in Psychology Task Force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The grant covers both research and outreach efforts with a special emphasis on racial and ethnic minority disparities associated with mental health and suicide rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two students have been selected as research assistants, Latonya Mitchell and Marian Montiel. They will receive scholarships while working toward developing a presentation or written manuscript on mental health and suicide based on their own research question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hope to gain a better awareness of who I am and who I am becoming, to help me become a better psychologist in the future,\u201d Mitchell said. I want people to know that we all suffer from different things, and we are more alike than we are different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montiel also hopes to gain a better understanding of mental health to apply to her future work as a clinical psychologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hope to give as much of myself as possible, in every aspect,\u201d Montiel said. \u201cTo give that comfort and hope to someone who may have been through similar things I have gone through and let them know it\u2019s going to be okay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both Montiel and Mitchell say they have experienced depression and anxiety, and believe that experience will help them help others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><img class=\"alignleft size-fusion-400 wp-image-10253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"creative minds team\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team-310x174.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/03\/Creative-Minds-Team.jpg 867w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the outreach side, Dr. Chance and her students will work with Can You See Me, Inc., a non-profit that works to raise awareness about mental health issues co-founded by student Demetrius Chance. One of the outreach programs will be a podcast hosted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MWSUCM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creative Minds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a student-founded group. The five-part podcast will stream live with guests, activities and giveaways.
