Established by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reaganlibrary.gov\/archives\/speech\/proclamation-5700-geography-awareness-week-1987\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">presidential proclamation in 1987<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Geography Awareness Week celebrates the study of the Earth and human communities\u2014and the important possibilities that these studies unlock. This year\u2019s theme chosen by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/02bcdff7c0d546629b30636e49b19bba\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Association of Geographers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is \u201cThe Future Is Here,\u201d highlighting the urgency and energy of geographers\u2019 work on topics ranging from public health to climate change to society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Missouri Western State University kicked off Geography Awareness Week with a celebration on Friday November 12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, featuring Mayor Bill McMurray. Other events include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mapathon to benefit the American Red Cross, 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 16. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No experience with maps needed! We will show you what to do. You can help improve maps for first responders in disaster areas. Sign-up at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/griff.vn\/Mapathon\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">griff.vn\/Mapathon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to participate in person in Remington 108 or via Zoom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GIS Day speakers, Wednesday, Nov. 17. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Celebrate GIS Day 2021 and Geography Awareness Week with two speakers who use geospatial analysis in their professional and academic lives.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. David Manning, University of Nebraska &#8211; Omaha, \u201cWater Quality Across Ecosystem Boundaries in the Great Plains and Beyond,\u201d 6 p.m., Agenstein 224, sponsored by Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Konner Larkin, Missouri Western State University, \u201cFrancis Marion and Sumter National Forest: Fuels Monitoring with Terrestrial LiDAR,\u201d 7 p.m., Agenstein 324, sponsored by MWSU Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brown Bag Lunch event, 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, Agenstein 224. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bring your lunch and join undergraduates from the Department of Geography at the University of Central Arkansas, Marisol Filares presenting, &#8220;Visual Identification of Soybean Irrigation Status with RBG Drone Imagery and the VARI Index&#8221; and Paul Seminara presenting, &#8220;Identifying the Effects of Climatic and Socioeconomic Variables on the Spread of COVID-19 in Arkansas.&#8221; Presentation will be face-to-face, but you can register for Zoom access at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/griff.vn\/GIF\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">griff.vn\/GIF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All events are free and open to the public.
