Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate Option

TESOL courses are taken solely online. TESOL classes are open to degree-seeking students and non-degree-seeking students.

NOTE: A Master’s of Applied Science in Assessment in TESOL is also available

How to apply:


Complete an online application for admission to the graduate school.

Admission to the program requires meeting all qualifications for acceptance to the Missouri Western Graduate School, successful completion of a baccalaureate degree in education or a related field, and a minimum GPA of a 2.75. The GRE is not required.

Note: You may apply to this program with or without having a teaching license.

*Individuals seeking a graduate certificate will complete the 18 TESOL hours listed above. Those seeking to complete the requirements for Missouri’s K-12 English for Speakers of the Other Languages certification will need to complete these 18 hours and complete or have previously completed undergraduate or graduate course in the three areas listed below:


  • Linguistics and English Linguistics (3)
  • Psychology and/or Education of the Exceptional Child (2)
  • Basic Reading Techniques for Secondary Teachers (2)
