She served as editor-in-chief of the Griffon News student newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Student Employment Association, in conjunction with the Midwest Association of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Employment Administrators, coordinates a National Student Employee of the year to recognize the outstanding achievements of students who work while attending college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four elementary education majors traveled to Interface A, the Missouri State Science, and Math Conference with <\/span><b>Dr. Ollie Bogdon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor of education: <\/span><b>Melissa Berger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Katherine Yeacker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Makayla Hedge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Shelby Pettigrew<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With Dr. Bogdon, they presented a three-hour workshop, The Story Behind 3 Dimensions and Phenomena Based Units.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Hannah Berry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Josiah Schmedding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were nominated to represent Missouri Western at the 33rd annual Missouri Governor\u2019s Student Leadership Forum on Faith and Values held last spring in Jefferson City, Missouri.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The forum challenges students\u2019 character development by encouraging them to reflect on their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">own decision-making skills, values, and belief systems. The forum\u2019s guiding principle is teaching students to embrace altruism rather than egotism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft welcomed students to the annual forum that was created by his father, former Missouri Governor and 79th U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. Students began the day having breakfast with Governor Mike Parson and First Lady Teresa Parson at the Missouri Governor\u2019s Mansion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Jordan Atkinson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor of communication, had an article published with his <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-author, Dr. Nicholas Tatum (Abilene Christian University), in the Basic Communication Course Annual, \u201cBest Practices for Recruiting Students from the Basic Course.\u201d The Basic Communication Course Annual publishes the best scholarship available on topics related to the basic communication course and is distributed nationally to scholars and educators <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interested in the course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missouri Western\u2019s <\/span><b>student chapter of the Wildlife Society<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> participated in the Missouri Department of Conservation\u2019s statewide Share the Harvest Program, which provides healthy animal protein through venison donated by sport hunters each year. Students picked up <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loads of readied venison from the meat processors and delivered it to Second Harvest Community Food Bank. In 2019, The student chapter distributed 3,366 lbs. of venison, enabling the delivery of a record 26,928 meals to the needy in the St. Joseph and surrounding area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Marianne Kunkel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor of English, was one of five poets invited by Kansas City\u2019s Mid-Continent Public Library to write an original poem for National Poetry Month in April 2020. Her poem, \u201cWonder,\u201d was posted on The Story Center\u2019s Facebook page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a virtual ceremony in the spring, Student Affairs awarded its annual Student Organization Awards:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Outstanding Student Organization Member Award: 3rd &#8211; <\/span><b>Caitlin Dillon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2nd &#8211; <\/span><b>Mackenzie O\u2019Neill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1st &#8211; <\/span><b>Alyssa Bonnett<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award: <\/span><b>Dr. Pam Clary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, advisor for the Organization of Student Social Workers and Renewal, and <\/span><b>Dr. James Carviou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, advisor for the MWSU Chapter of Society for Collegiate Journalists<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dean Hoff Outstanding Achievement Award: Sophomore &#8211; <\/span><b>Zo\u00eb Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Junior &#8211; <\/span><b>Mackenzie O\u2019Neill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Senior &#8211; <\/span><b>Cecilia Tackett<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Robert A Vartabedian President\u2019s Outstanding Leader Award: <\/span><b>Jocelyn Sands<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New Program of the Year: <\/span><b>Residential Life Northside RAs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for \u201cEscape Room\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Program of the Year: <\/span><b>Geography Club<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Community Service Program of the Year: <\/span><b>Organization of Student Social Workers<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Glenn Marion Community Service Award: <\/span><b>Geography Club<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Spirit of the Griffon Award: <\/span><b>Phi Delta Theta<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fraternity and Sorority of the Year: Fraternity &#8211; <\/span><b>Alpha Sigma Phi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sorority &#8211; <\/span><b>Delta Sigma Theta<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Outstanding Faith Based Organizations: <\/span><b>Renewal<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Best New Student Organization: <\/span><b>American Institute of Graphic Artists<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Student Organization of the Year: <\/span><b>Student Athlete Advisory Committee<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Alpha Chi National Conference did not take place face-to-face in Albuquerque, New Mexico, students in Missouri Western\u2019s Lambda Chapter, <\/span><b>Breanna Hancock<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Devin Mattoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Rebecca Prest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Becca Smith-Grantham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Dr. Angela Haas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor of history, uploaded their collaborative research project, Culturally Transmitted: Controversies and Conspiracies Plaguing the Modern Vaccine, and won the grand prize of $5,000. The collaborative research projects include extensive investigation of a topic by a team of students from different majors, culminating in a paper and conference presentation. <\/span><b>Smith-Grantham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> submitted the paper, The Reciprocity Equation: Engagement and Expectation in the Social Media Exchange, and won a $3,000 Benedict Fellowship to pursue graduate studies.
