{"id":3843,"date":"2014-04-29T15:17:16","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T15:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lamp1.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/?p=818"},"modified":"2019-06-12T10:23:21","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T15:23:21","slug":"student-group-learns-through-corrections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/2014\/04\/29\/student-group-learns-through-corrections\/","title":{"rendered":"Student group learns through corrections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hunter Ewart had only been on campus a few days when she accidently wandered into Wilson Hall on her way to class in a different building (\u201cI think I may have been texting and walking,\u201d she admits). Ewart immediately realized she was in the wrong building but was captivated by a lecture she could hear. \u201cHe was talking about gangs,\u201d she says of Dr. David Nicholson, \u201cand before I knew it, students were coming out of classrooms, and I realized I had totally missed my class. But it was awesome. I loved his lecture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That experience convinced her to pursue a criminal justice major, and the senior from St. Joseph will graduate in December 2014 with three emphases \u2013 corrections, juvenile delinquency and administration.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img class=\"size-medium wp-image-819 alignleft\" alt=\"ACA Student Group (1)\" src=\"http:\/\/lamp1.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ACA-Student-Group-1-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last year, when Dr. Greg Lindsteadt, associate professor of criminal justice, encouraged students to restart the American Corrections Association student group that had not been active for several years, Ewart was on board and now serves as the group\u2019s president. \u201cI think I threw myself under the bus,\u201d she said with a laugh. \u201cBut we needed unity and more collaboration among students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group re-organized in the spring of 2013 and last fall, students held a campus book drive for the Riverbend Treatment Facility in St. Joseph and attended a conference. They also helped with a Missouri Division of Youth Services football tournament in the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex on campus and solicited donations and provided snack bags for the youth who played. This spring, they held a drive to collect baby items for women in correctional facilities in Nebraska whose babies are allowed to visit.<\/p>\n<p>One of the group\u2019s main activities, however, is touring correctional facilities across the Midwest, which Dr. Lindsteadt says helps students compare the philosophies of the states\u2019 correctional systems and determine which is the best fit for them.<\/p>\n<p>Ewart said the tours she has experienced in Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas convinced her to pursue a career in corrections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve gotten a good education here,\u201d Ewart says. \u201cI can apply everything I\u2019ve learned in my future job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>-end-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hunter Ewart had only been on campus a few days when she accidently wandered into Wilson Hall on her way to class in a different building (\u201cI think I may have been texting and walking,\u201d she admits).
