{"id":3813,"date":"2013-01-04T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-04T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lamp1.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/?p=363"},"modified":"2019-06-12T10:22:18","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T15:22:18","slug":"university-offers-sport-and-fitness-management-masters-degree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/2013\/01\/04\/university-offers-sport-and-fitness-management-masters-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"University offers sport and fitness management master\u2019s degree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To help meet the workforce demand for managerial positions in the field of sport and fitness, the Coordinating Board for Higher Education approved a new master\u2019s degree at Missouri Western: Master of Applied Science in Sport and Fitness Management.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brenda Blessing, chair of the department of health, physical education and recreation, said the program is designed to prepare students to manage and lead in the areas of intercollegiate or professional sports, entertainment, or fitness and cardio rehabilitation facilities. \u201cWe think our program is unique and will attract students in a variety of disciplines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like the other four MAS degree options offered by Missouri Western, this option requires an applied science core of business courses along with courses in the sport and fitness field. The program also includes an applied learning component.<\/p>\n<p>Tiffany Goldwire, from Dell City, Okla., said the business courses are especially beneficial, since she is learning what goes on \u201cbehind the scenes\u201d of athletic programs. \u201cI never really thought about it before, but it is very helpful,\u201d she said. Tiffany is a graduate assistant for women\u2019s basketball.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Medina, from Houston, says the program is preparing him for his career goal of being a college basketball coach.
