{"id":280,"date":"2012-09-06T14:46:50","date_gmt":"2012-09-06T14:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lamp1.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/?p=280"},"modified":"2019-06-12T10:22:20","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T15:22:20","slug":"theatre-season-a-success-shows-announced-for-2012-13-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/2012\/09\/06\/theatre-season-a-success-shows-announced-for-2012-13-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Theatre season a success; shows announced for 2012-13 season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2011-12 theatre season, \u201cA Season of Classics,\u201d is being called a success, as more than 7,700 people attended the four productions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very grateful that the campus and the St. Joseph community have been so supportive,\u201d said Tee Quillin, assistant professor of theatre and cinema. \u201cWe knew that a four-show season was ambitious, but we were also confident that audiences would embrace and appreciate the spectacular talents of our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRomeo and Juliet\u201d played to sold-out audiences over four performances in October, with a total attendance of 1,340. \u201cA Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas\u201d drew nearly 3,500 people to 11 performances in December. More than 1,000 people attended the four performances of \u201cArsenic and Old Lace\u201d in February, with more than 1,800 attending the eight performances of the musical \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d in April.<\/p>\n<p>Dates have already been set for the 2012-13 season, \u201cA Year of the Tony,\u201d and five productions are scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re stretching ourselves again next season, with two musicals and what we\u2019re calling a \u2018repertory coupling\u2019 of two plays on alternate nights over two weekends,\u201d said Dallas Henry, assistant professor of theatre and cinema. \u201cWe hope the community will again come out and enjoy what\u2019s sure to be a memorable season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2012-13 shows include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oct. 4-7: \u201cJ.B.\u201d by Archibald MacLeish. This modern retelling of the Biblical story of Job won the 1959 Tony Award for Best Play.<\/li>\n<li>Nov. 29-Dec. 8:\u00a0 \u201cAnnie,\u201d book by Thomas Meeha, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charmin, based on the Tribune Media Service comic strip \u201cLittle Orphan Annie.\u201d The story of the spunky Depression-era orphan who wins the heart of billionaire Oliver Warbucks won the 1977 Tony Award for Best Musical.<\/li>\n<li>Feb. 21-24 and Feb. 28-March 3: \u201cPrivate Lives,\u201d by Noel Coward and \u201cGod of Carnage,\u201d by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton. \u201cPrivate Lives,\u201d one of the most sophisticated, entertaining plays ever written, won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. \u201cGod of Carnage,\u201d a comedy about grown-ups who meet to discuss the behavior of their children and become increasingly childish themselves, won the 2009 Tony for Best Play.<\/li>\n<li>April 11-14: \u201cSweeney Todd,\u201d book by Hugh Wheeler, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, based on a version of \u201cSweeney Todd\u201d by Christopher Bond.
