{"id":1715,"date":"2017-05-12T16:34:48","date_gmt":"2017-05-12T16:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/?p=1715"},"modified":"2019-06-12T10:23:56","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T15:23:56","slug":"penguins-up-close-and-personal-lauran-west-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/2017\/05\/12\/penguins-up-close-and-personal-lauran-west-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins Up Close and Personal: Lauran West &#8217;16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If anyone asked Lauran West \u201916 as a child what her favorite animal was, she never hesitated, and her answer was always \u201cpenguins.\u201d So imagine her excitement when she was hired for a two-month internship at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska to care for and feed the tuxedoed birds.<\/p>\n<p>West, a biology major with a zoology concentration, landed that dream internship this past fall and loved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-3.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-3-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1716\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-3-200x148.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-3-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-3-400x297.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-3-600x445.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-3.jpg 713w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>every minute of it. Along with the penguins, she took care of the puffins, murres, and toucans, helping with diet preparation, administering medications, cleaning exhibits, and feeding them. She also got to help build rookeries (nurseries) for the birds.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do zookeepers take care of the animals\u2019 physical needs, West said, it\u2019s important to stimulate all their senses so they don\u2019t get bored in the exhibits. That means activities with laser pointers, music, bubbles, mirrors, bouncy balls, and painting (penguin Picassos, perhaps?).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to work directly with them has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,\u201d West said of the penguins. \u201cI enjoyed observing the animals up close and personal while studying their behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-1.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-1-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-1-200x234.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-1-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-1-400x468.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-1-600x702.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a>Her most valuable lesson of the internship, she says, was learning how a zoo operates. \u201cThere is a lot that goes into maintaining a zoo, and keeping the animals safe, healthy, and comfortable is its number-one priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West, from Wathena, Kansas, didn\u2019t come to Missouri Western knowing she wanted to work in a zoo, but when she seemed to be continually drawn to biology classes, she made up her mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was refreshing to be able to get out of the classroom and outside for field work, and I knew animals were always a passion of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West said a study away trip to Belize, which included a lot of snorkeling and studying ocean organisms, was the highlight of her college career.<\/p>\n<p>She said she also appreciated the passion of her professors for their subjects. \u201cThey encouraged students to get excited about what they were learning, and they cared about students\u2019 successes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West is currently an animal caretaker\/performer at SeaWorld San Antonio in Texas.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2-200x113.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/05\/West-Lauran-1-2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eventually, she says, she would like to travel to other countries to observe animals in their natural habitats and conduct studies about the impact of environmental changes on them.<\/p>\n<p>But she\u2019ll always have Omaha.
