On Friday of Homecoming weekend, the 34<sup>th<\/sup> annual Alumni Association Awards Banquet was held on campus, and eight were honored:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerry \u201971 and Linda Myers<br \/>\nHerb \u201935 and Peggy Iffert Award for Outstanding Service to the University<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1598\" style=\"width: 186px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/Jerry-and-Linda-Myers-picture.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/Jerry-and-Linda-Myers-picture-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Jerry '71 and Linda Myers \" width=\"176\" height=\"141\" class=\" wp-image-1598\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jerry &#8217;71 and Linda Myers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For Jerry \u201971 and Linda Myers, it\u2019s all about the Griffons. They have been faithful supporters of Missouri Western Athletics for more than four decades. You can always count on seeing them at both home and away games of several sports.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry became sports information director for Missouri Western in 1973 and served in that role for six years. In fact, it was he who created the Griffon logo that is still in use today.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped down from the Gold Coat board this past year after serving on it for 30 years (as president some of those years). He remains a longtime member of the Athletics Hall of Fame committee.<\/p>\n<p>The couple owns and operates Jerry and Linda Myers Shelter Insurance in St. Joseph, Missouri. Son Jay \u201989 and daughter Kelley (Myers) Schenk \u201992 are both alums.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe width=\"1778\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7puTUZo4GKI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Shannon Swanson White \u201906 \u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>GOLD Award \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Armed with a graphic design degree from Missouri Western, Shannon Swanson White \u201906 was hired as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/white_shannon-cropped.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/white_shannon-cropped-292x300.jpg\" alt=\"white_shannon-cropped\" width=\"140\" height=\"144\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1600\" \/><\/a>graphic designer at Populous in Kansas City, Missouri. She wasn\u2019t there very long when she was given the opportunity to help with signage for major events.<\/p>\n<p>To date, she has been involved in nine Super Bowls, five NCAA Division I Final Fours, an MLB All-Star Game and a Democratic National Convention. She also helped with signage when Kauffman Stadium was renovated in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>White fondly remembers her college career and considers some of her professors friends to this day. Mittie was just 25 years old.<\/p>\n<p>In the first year, the team made it to the Sweet 16 in the national postseason tournament, and he was got the job. Ellen was born just 20 minutes after they arrived at the hospital. That, quite possibly, was a portent of her career as a renowned pianist.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Sommer is a full-time lecturer in piano in the School of Music at the University of Kansas. She performs extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Central and South America and Europe, and serves as a pianist for regional, national and international competitions and festivals. She is also a founding member of the Allegresse trio, and has collaborated on several recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Along with her bachelor\u2019s degree in music from Missouri Western, she earned a master\u2019s from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. She taught at Missouri Western for 10 years and joined the KU faculty in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Sommer is the mother of one son.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe width=\"1778\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EObhyY0MCjU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Dr. Bob Bergland<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Distinguished Faculty Award \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bob Bergland, professor of journalism and integrated media, became advisor for Missouri Western\u2019s student newspaper, Griffon News, when he was hired in 1997.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/bergland.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/bergland-300x270.jpg\" alt=\"bergland\" width=\"167\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/bergland-200x180.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2017\/01\/bergland.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When he began working on the student newspaper, \u201ccutting\u201d meant with a scissors and \u201cpasting\u201d was done with glue. \u201cThe field is continually evolving, and it forces me to learn new things,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s challenging, but I really enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also directs the Master of Applied Arts in Digital Media program and has guided many student research projects. Some of those students presented the results of their research at international conferences, as he has coordinated several study away trips overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bergland earned a Bachelor of Arts in Writing from Millikin University, and Master of Arts in English\/Rhetoric and a Ph.D in English\/Rhetoric and Composition. Under his tenure, enrollment grew to just under 6,000.<\/p>\n<p>From his earliest days as director of Admissions, McCauley stressed customer service.
