{"id":1377,"date":"2016-05-06T18:28:57","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T18:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/?p=1377"},"modified":"2019-06-12T10:24:04","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T15:24:04","slug":"community-supports-international-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.missouriwestern.edu\/magazine\/2016\/05\/06\/community-supports-international-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Community supports international students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Fumi Cheever, a native of Japan, was an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada-Reno, she didn\u2019t have a lot of interaction with the Reno community. So when she was working on her master\u2019s degree at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, she sought out volunteer opportunities in the community, and even got international undergraduate students involved.<br \/>\n\u201cI realized how important it was and how it benefits both ways,\u201d she said of the community service.<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, she was pleased to see that, when she arrived on campus last September, Missouri Western\u2019s International Student Services Office had already developed a relationship with community members. Additionally, many community members attended international student events on campus throughout the academic year.<br \/>\nGregory noted that community members don\u2019t have to be a member of Brookdale if they want to get involved. It\u2019s as simple as getting on her email list and choosing the activities you want to be a part of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the perfect thing for busy people. There\u2019s no commitment and they can get involved only as much as they want,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cheever said it has been wonderful for the international students. \u201cInternational students are connected to campus, but it\u2019s very important and valuable to them to learn about American family life and how Americans celebrate holidays. They (community members) offer experiences that a college campus can\u2019t necessarily provide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt starts with an event, but it branches into deeper relationships,\u201d Gregory said. \u201cStudents really get to know people off campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noted that some in her group have even become English partners for the international students, helping them get a better grasp of the language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps overcome stereotypes and misconceptions,\u201d Cheever said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a very positive relationship with Brookdale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To get involved, email Christy at <a href=\"mailto:gregory_christy@hotmail.com\">gregory_christy@hotmail.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Fumi Cheever, a native of Japan, was an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada-Reno, she didn\u2019t have a lot of interaction with the Reno community.
